Float or Don't? Build a cardboard boat!
It all began with a real cardboard boat race…
Then the threat of “Battle Boats” prompted a unique design concept… CARDBOARD TUBE TRUSSES! And the unsinkable surfboat was born!
This makes a fantastic team or family project! Adult supervision / help needed for cutting the cardboard.
Printables included so you can award medals and participation badges! Just add ribbon!
Basic material suggestions – exact amount will depend on size of project planned:
- Cardboard
- Duct tape – 2 rolls per team
- Plastic tablecloths – 3 per team
- Cord (to tow your boat if desired)
- Empty gallon jugs of water (to use as scoops to paddle your boat)
- PVC poles (to be used to build paddles)
Planning materials:
- paper, pencils, pens, sizing table, tape measure
- calculator or smart phone
Cutting materials:
- sturdy scissors
- utility knife or box-cutter (adult supervision / assistance required)
- straight edges (quilters rules work great)
- cutting mat or other table protection… cardboard works for this, too
And of course, you’ll need a pool or other body of water to run your races / tests. Just not an alligator-infested lagoon! BONUS: printable medals included! Just add ribbon.
